Temperatures will get down to minus 1 in some places over the weekend

Ireland is set for a chilly weekend as temperatures plunge towards freezing, with weather experts also flagging the possibility of stormy conditions ahead of the October bank holiday.

Met Éireann has forecast a largely dry and sunny weekend across the country, although overnight temperatures could fall as low as 1°C, with frost and fog developing in some areas.

However, the settled spell may be short lived, with forecasters monitoring a potential return to wet and windy weather next week as Atlantic weather systems begin to influence conditions.

Weather experts have also highlighted the possibility of more significant unsettled weather developing around the October bank holiday weekend, which runs from Saturday, October 24, to Monday, October 26.

Cathal Nolan of Ireland's Weather Channel has highlighted a growing possibility of stormier weather developing towards the end of October with wetter and windier conditions.

According to Met Éireann's latest national forecast high pressure will dominate conditions over the coming days, bringing plenty of dry and bright weather.

Friday night will be dry for most areas, with long clear spells and temperatures dropping to between 1°C and 5°C.

Met Éireann has warned that a touch of frost is possible in places, while patches of mist and fog are also expected to develop.

Saturday will bring a dry, bright and crisp day, with plenty of sunshine once early mist and fog clear.

Temperatures will reach highs of 10°C to 13°C, accompanied by light northeasterly or variable breezes.

However, Saturday night is expected to be particularly chilly, with temperatures again falling to between 1°C and 5°C and potentially reaching freezing locally.

Sunday will remain largely dry and sunny, with afternoon temperatures of 10°C to 13°C, before another cold night sees temperatures dip to between 1°C and 6°C.

Monday will be a dry and bright day for most with mist and fog clearing early on. There is the chance of a few showers drifting into parts of the southeast through the day. Highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees in a light to moderate northeasterly wind.

There is uncertainty in the forecast from Tuesday. Current indications show high pressure continuing to dominate with mostly dry conditions for most but there is a chance of showers in the south and some patchy rain in the northeast. Highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees with mostly moderate southeasterly winds.

While there is uncertainty in the forecast, it looks most likely that low pressure will return with spells of wet and windy weather for the remainder of next week.
