Galway In Days Gone By

Blocking the way
At the weekly meeting of the Galway Urban Council, on Thursday, Mr. M. J. Cooke presided. Also present: Messrs. Connolly, Redington, Griffin, Bailey, and Jas. M. Pringle.
Mr. Connolly said that he passed by the market at Market-st. on Saturday, and found the people selling meat laid on shutters fifteen inches wide, on which to rest the meat, effectually blocking the way and taking up the space that country women with eggs and butter formerly occupied.
The country women were pushed off the pavement and out of the way. He remonstrated with some of the men but was merely insulted for his pains. The whole matter was an absolute disgrace.
Mr. Pringle: Would it be in order to ask the Civic Guards to remove any person not selling farm produce? – Secretary: We have no bye-law which would enable us to do that. – Chairman: If we can’t remove them on that point, we can ask the Civic Guard to remove them as an obstruction. We can charge them 1s. a lineal foot for the place they take up.
Mr. Redington: I saw a lot of townspeople on Saturday trying to do their shopping, yet on account of difficulty in moving about the markets, owing to the obstruction of meat and clothes vendors, they were forced to return home.
