Galway In Days Gone By

Festival Week

The round of the year has brought us to the eve of Festival Week in Galway. Belated summer gives promise of brighter weather, and the political skies are certainly clearer than they haver been for the past decade.

In the autumn of 1914, the European war broke like a thunder clap, and the banks closed upon the very eve of Galway Races. Looking forward to next week’s high festival in the City of the Tribes, we have much to be thankful for.

We have also much to be thankful for. We have also much to work for. Politics and politicians may change, but in the ultimate the prosperity of a city and a community depends upon the well-directed efforts of the habitants.

Coincident with Galway Races, 1924, the first official publication of the West of Ireland Tourist Development Association has been issued. It is purely practical work, and altogether confines itself to a list of hotels and boarding-houses with their charges, as well as a list of motors for hire in Galway and Connemara.

Later an illustrated tourist guide will be added, and shipping and railway information will be given.
