Fraudsters trying COVID-19 scams to get at your money

By Garda Sergeant Michael Walsh
WHEN I sat down last month to write an article for this newspaper, COVID-19 was merely distant international news. Never did I imagine that we would find ourselves where we are today. But I know the actions that are now being taken are for the right reasons, and we in An Garda Síochána are here to help the public and support all the other front-line agencies.
With 319 new Gardai sworn in at Templemore in recent weeks, An Garda Síochána has never had such high numbers. Notwithstanding this, the Garda Commissioner has restructured rosters, reduced annual leave and placed less of an emphasis on non-essential services – all to ensure we have maximum numbers of men and women on the front line.
This is a particularly difficult and concerning time for everyone and our message is that we are here to help, especially the elderly and vulnerable. Our mission has always been to keep people safe, and never has that been such a high priority for us. We are working 24-hours each and every day and we encouraging anyone who needs our help to please ring their local Garda station.
People are obviously concerned about the recent restrictions that have been imposed, but by following the HSE guidelines we will reduce the spread of COVID-19 and save lives. Everyone must remember that if they get sick, the people that are impacted most are the ones that are closest to them, such as family and friends, so the public have a huge role to play in this.
