Better to be safe than sorry when storing your valuables

Garda Crime Watch by Sergeant Michael Walsh
WHILE burglary is still trending well below pre-pandemic levels, a number of homes were targeted across Galway in recent weeks. Burglaries can happen at any time of the day – however, most wintertime break-ins occur between 4pm and 9pm, with cash and jewellery the most sought-after items.
An Garda Síochána would always advise against keeping large sums of cash and valuables on your premises. I strongly advise that cash is kept in your bank, post office or credit union.
If, however it is necessary to hold cash and valuables at home, a good quality properly fitted safe could be considered. There is a lot to consider when buying a home safe.
They come in a variety of types, including wall safes, floor safes, fireproof safes and so on. Each have their own unique benefits, so you need to consider your exact personal requirements.
Without doubt the most important thing about a safe is its security rating. This indicates the level of security and the maximum amount of cash or valuables that an insurance company will cover if stored in the safe overnight. The higher the rating, the more secure the safe.
A safe's grade is intended to be an indication of the unit's resistance to attack, and this is true if the safe has been properly tested in an accredited laboratory and certified by an independent accredited European body.
