GALWAY TD WANTS SPORTS FUNDING REINSTATED

The Minister for Sport is being urged to reinstate the Sports Capital Grants Programme so that clubs in Galway can upgrade facilities.

The call was made in the Dáil this week by Galway West Independent T.D, Noel Grealish.

The closing date for applications under the Sports Capital Grants Programme ended in 2008.

Deputy Grealish says many clubs have already benefited from the funding, which promotes sport and social interaction.

In response, Minister Deenihan said €33 million is provided in this year's budget to meet payments in respect of projects which have already been allocated funding.

Minister Deenihan said there may be options to introduce a new type of funding scheme for sport.
