GALWAY PROTESTORS JOIN 'OCCUPY WALL STREET' MOVEMENT

Protests inspired by the Occupy Wall Street movement in New York took place in Galway this weekend.

Demonstrators erected four tents on Eyre Square at midday on Saturday and carried out what Gardai describe as a "peaceful" protest.

It's understood the protestors were still camped out in the city centre last night.

Similar protests against "corporate greed" were held in Dublin and at locations worldwide.

Italy's capital city of Rome was one of the worst-affected by violence as hundreds of protestors torched cars, smashed bank windows and attacked a church.
