Facilitating travel

The visit of Mr. W. Moore, secretary, Irish Motor Agents’ Association, to Galway on Tuesday, and the consequent organisation of a vigorous county branch are matters of more than ordinary interest, for amongst the problems to be faced in the future next to the establishment of law and order ranks in importance that of providing decent transit facilities by road and rail; supplying the means of inter-communication between town and town; affording facilities for conveying agricultural produce to the market by the simplest, cheapest and most modern methods.

In this work the motor agents can play a great and a most useful part. recently, the motor agent and the motorist have been attacked on all sides: by the highway robber and thief, by the militarist run amok, but the Government which compels the humble owner of the Ford to pay as high a tax for his car as the owner of a Rolls-Royce, and by local authorities which have failed to provide decent roads; and in consequence subjected the unlucky motorist to needless dangers and expenses.

This Irish Motor Agents’ Association is governed by a central council which meets in Dublin monthly, and by a standing committee. Mr. W.P. Higgins has been appointed secretary of the County Galway Association and delegate to the Dublin meetings. We understand that the county association will meet monthly. We sincerely hope it will take up the question of the provision of decent roads; and the widening of dangerous corners; increase in the area of visibility at what are now blind turns by reducing the height of walls and hedges; the provision of road signs.

Recently, the central council sent a deputation to the Provisional Government to represent that in view of the wholesale stealing of motor cars, the state should undertake insurance, such as was provided by the British Government for ships during the European war.

Callous robbery

On returning from the fair of Loughrea an old man named John Ford, Closetoken, was robbed of a sum of money (amount unknown) within a short distance from his home.

Other robberies of a similar nature on the same occasion are also reported to have taken place on different roads leading from the town.
