Galway West T.D Éamon Ó Cuív threatened to resign at a meeting of the party last night.

The acrimonious marathon meeting was called to discuss the party's plans for a candidate for the Presidential elections.

According to the Irish Independent, a decision about the party's position on nominating a candidate for the Áras had to be postponed as dissent within Fianna Fáil grows.

Party leader Micheál Martin failed to secure support for his proposal that the party NOT nominate any candidate for the Presidency.

At one stage, Deputy Leader of Fianna Fáil, Galway West T.D Éamon Ó Cuív threatened to quit telling the meeting he would find it difficult to stay on if Micheál Martin's proposal was voted on.

The issue has now been deferred until next Tuesday.
