Five Galway sides in action in Connacht Junior Cup
Soccer Wrap with Mike Rafferty
Five Galway sides are in Connacht Junior Cup quarter-final action in three games this weekend and it will be a real test of Colga’s ability as they head to Drom for a meeting with the holders Salthill Devon on Sunday afternoon.
Two former winners of the competition meet at Laurel Park, when Corrib Rangers welcome Ballinasloe Town; while in the third game, Mervue United will play host to the remaining Mayo League side in Castlebar Celtic. All three games have a 2pm kickoff.
Having won their last six league games in succession, Corofin United will certainly be primed for their home Connacht Shield quarter-final against Ballinrobe Town at 12.30 tomorrow. Two city sides are in action at 2pm on Sunday with Knocknacarra at home against Kiltimagh-Knock at Cappagh Park, while West United B travel to meet Westport United B.
LOCAL CUP
While more games fell by the wayside over the weekend than were actually played, the Michael Byrne Cup took centre stage, with three games surviving from the seven scheduled.
Salthill Devon were always in command in Drom against Hibernians and a 3-1 success gives a narrow viewing of the overall proceedings. In general, the home side dominated matters for the duration and only some superb goalkeeping by PJ Ward kept matters so competitive looking.
A Shane O’Rourke header and a Lucas de Paula shot had Devon 2- 0 up early on, before Gaby Okocha pulled one back for Hibernians before the break, with a smart run and shot that got the better of Arek Mamala.
