The European Commission is to investigate state aid into Bus Eireann services across the country including Galway.

It follows questions raised by Northwest MEP Jim Higgins into the tendering process of state-subsidised routes in Galway city.

He also questioned if the European Commission was aware that state aid is given to one semi-state bus operator in the city while another private operator competes on city routes, but with no state aid.

During a Dail debate last October, it was revealed that Bus Eireann received 45 million euro in state funding in 20-10.

NorthWest MEP Jim Higgins says bus services should be fully opened to competition.
