Donoghue’s decision throws hurling manager’s race wide open

GALWAY GAA is still on course to unveil a new senior hurling manager by the end of next week despite Micheál Donoghue opting out of the race to succeed Shane O’Neill.
The former team boss hadn’t even reached the negotiating process with local GAA officials after deciding that the “timing was too soon” to go back to a post from which he led Galway to All-Ireland glory in 2017.
Family reasons are believed to be a key factor in Donoghue’s decision which will come as a disappointment to Galway supporters who had presumed the Clarinbridge clubman was set to return to the sideline helm.
The focus now turns to alternative candidates as Galway GAA attempts to assemble a strong backroom team to support their preferred choice.
With Donoghue out of the picture, the managerial spotlight is now on the likes of Brian Hanley, Cathal Murray, Kevin Lally, Johnny Kelly and Jeffrey Lynskey.
