Club’s record goal scorer and current manager optimistic about the future

HEADING into his second full season as Galway United manager, Alan Murphy burned the midnight oil in putting the necessary preparations in place for the First Division campaign ahead.

Murphy may be a native of Ballinrobe, but few have given such sterling service to the club over the decades. He has only the best interests of Galway United at heart and learned a lot from his early experiences in the dug-out.

Having taken over from Shane Keegan in the summer of 2018, the club’s record all-time goal scorer (76) was thrown in at the deep end and his young squad never really threatened a serious bid for promotion the following season.

It proved a challenging campaign. United finished seventh of the ten clubs, with just seven wins from 27 matches, but that statistic wasn’t reflective of the team’s displays as they lost a series of matches by 1-0.

Murphy knew that there was something to build on for the current campaign and during the off-season, he put in the hard yards recruiting players and building up the squad to 29.

He targeted local talent and players from the counties around, anxious to build a connection with the supporters. He reckons 22 or 23 of the squad meet that sense of identity.
