Stats show fall in new websites

More than 2,100 ‘.ie’ websites were registered in Galway last year, down 10% on 2018, according to a new report.
According to figures from IEDR (the IE Domain Registry), a total of 2,124 ‘.ie’ domains were registered in Galway during 2019, which is down 10.3% on the previous year, when the figure stood at 2,369. IE is the official website domain for Ireland.
According to David Curtin, Chief Executive of IEDR, .ie domains are important because they present a “trusted brand”.
“As Ireland becomes more globalised and the internet connects us to more international businesses and institutions, it’s essential that our communities, be they parishes, villages, or towns in Galway or elsewhere, have the means to identify themselves online as familiar, local, and Irish through the trusted .ie brand,” he said.
In 2018, there were 2,369 .ie domains recorded in Galway, an increase of 31.1% on the previous year.
Connacht registered 4,111 new .ie domains in 2019, which brings the total number of such domains in the province to 21,718 up 7.67% year on year.
At the end of 2019, the total number of .ie domains in the national database was 280,958, up from 154,918 at the end of 2010 (+81%) and 262,140 at the end of 2018 (+7%).
