Galway woman plans to start her own business after exam success

A Ballinasloe woman – who returned to Galway after working for some of the biggest names in London finance – has enhanced her career prospects through obtaining one of the top exams marks in the country.
Joan Brett, who now lives in Galway city with her husband Paul and family, hopes to establish her own business after completing the Accounting Technicians Ireland Diploma online with flying colours.
The accounting qualification is recognised as the fastest pathway to a fulfilling and rewarding career in the profession.
Joan spent ten years working in the fast-paced environment of London’s financial sector for companies such as Merrill Lynch, Mitsubishi, Barclays Capital and BNP Paribas.
“I worked with traders in a target driven and tight deadline environment and enjoyed every moment of it,” said Joan.
“I met my soon-to-be husband there and we decided to come home to live in Galway, where I took time off to rear our two children.
“I did a short stint in a small local branch of BNP Paribas and spent some time working in the accounts department of Connacht Rugby.
“As my husband's IT business began to grow, I took care of the bookkeeping and soon realised I needed to understand more about accounting.
