The Government has confirmed that a total of 115 special classes will be provided at primary and second-level schools across the city and county for the next academic year – an increase of 14% in the year-on-year provision for Galway.

The list, published by the National Council for Special Education, was welcomed by the Minister of State for Special Education and Inclusion, Josepha Madigan.

A total of 36 primary schools across the county and 27 secondary schools will benefit from the announcement, with the vast majority of them having those special classes reconfirmed for another year.

The vast majority of these special classes will be for pupils with Autism/Autistic Spectrum Disorders, as well as those with a Mild, Moderate of Severe/Profound General Learning Disability.

Some will cater for pupils with multiple disabilities; specific speech and language disorder, ASD early intervention, or hearing impairment.
