Boston Scientific jobs shock

Boston Scientific has abandoned production of one of its medical devices – sending shock-waves through its 3,700-strong workforce in Galway, where an unknown number of job losses are expected before Christmas.
The US multinational, Galway’s largest employer, announced overnight Tuesday that it was immediately discontinuing its production of LOTUS Edge Aortic Valve System.
The company, which has a base at Ballybrit for over 25 years, also announced a global recall of unused stock of LOTUS Edge.
It’s understood several hundred workers in Galway are dedicated to LOTUS Edge – a ‘town hall’ style meeting is expected to take place at the plant later today (Thursday).
A Boston Scientific spokesperson told the Connacht Tribune that the exact number of employees impacted had not yet been quantified but they expect it to be ‘minimal’.
“Unfortunately, the decision to stop investing in the LOTUS Edge platform means we will immediately stop all associated production and new product development activities, resulting in the elimination of certain roles.
“The exact number of job losses is unknown at this time as we are entering into a consultation process. We are actively seeking to reduce any impacts through re-deployments within Boston Scientific so overall we anticipate the impact to be minimal.
“We recognise that this is difficult for employees impacted by these changes, and we are committed to providing these individuals support to help with their transition,” said a spokesperson.
