Junior Minister and Galway TD Ciaran Cannon is this afternoon announcing plans for a new school building for Presentation College Athenry.

The new school will be located on a 20 acre site adjacent to the Raheen Woods hotel and will acommodate up to 1 thousand pupils.

Presentation college Athenry caters for just over 1 thousand secondary students, and almost half of its accomodation is in prefabs or 'temporary accomodation'.

The campaign to build a new school building has been active for several years, and a 20 acre site on the outskirts of the town adjacent to the Raheen Woods Hotel was secured some time ago.

The Department of Education has now agreed to allow the project enter the 'design process' stage whereby a team of architects and engineers will plan the structure of the new school.

Minister Ciaran Cannon is hopeful the new school will be up and running in three years time.
